of asthma. No subject was assuming drugs or had suffered from respiratory infections in the last month. All subjects had normal lung function tests. With HViso 10 subjects had EI-B and 12 had EI-VCD. With HVhypo 8 subjects had EI-B and 15 EI-VCD. Eighteen subiects (49%) had Ddef (serum 25hydroxycholecalcipherol , 25 ng/mL). Serum levels of vitamin D were significantly lower in athletes with than in those without EI-VCD, either with HViso (19.1 6 1.8 vs 25.7 6 1.5 ng/mL; P 1⁄4 0.013) or with HVhypo (20.2 6 1.9 vs 26.2 6 1.8 ng/mL; P 1⁄4 0.029). No influence of vitamin D on EI-B could be demonstrated. Vitamin D levels were significantly related to the decrease in MIF50 (as % of baseline) during the test (HViso: r 1⁄4 0.41; P , 0.015 and HVipo: r 1⁄4 0.42; P 1⁄4 0.017). Conclusions: Our young athletes had a high prevalence of paradoxical vocal cord adduction during HV, which was strongly associated to Ddef. The high prevalence of Ddef was expected, since the study was conducted during winter in a town located beyond 458 latitude. Vitamin D deficiency may favour laryngospasm by decreasing calcium availability, ATP production and Ca-ATPase pump activity in the striate muscle cell, with consequent tetanic contraction and delayed relaxation. The fact that alkalosis worsens hypocalcemia accounts for the higher prevalence of laryngospasm observed during HVhypo.

Do Statins Improve Lung Function in Asthmatic Patients? A Randomized and Double-Blind Trial
There are evidences that statins have anti-inflammatory effects beyond their cholesterol lowering properties. The study was conducted to assess the effects of atorvastatin on asthma as an inflammatory disease. Patients with moderate to severe asthma were entered this randomized, double blind, crossover clinical trial. The impact of oral atorvastatin (10 mg/day) on the lung function of nor...
متن کاملThe Significance of BODE (BMI, Obstruction, Dyspnea, Exercise) Index in Patients with Mustard Lung
Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) secondary to sulfur mustard exposure, known as mustard lung, is an important late pulmonary complication. The BODE (Body mass index, Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise) index has been established as a valuable tool for determining the adverse consequences of COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the BODE index in pat...

Abstract Background & Aims: The peripheral parts of the lung are known as the main place of airflow obstruction in asthmatic patients; but the symptoms of asthma with the location of airway obstruction are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between asthma symptoms and severity of asthma and proximal and distal airways using function tests. Materials &...

Introduction: Asthma and obesity are among diseases that cause several problems and impair quality of life. The concurrence of these diseases, changes in the respiratory physiology, changes associated with obesity and limited activity associated with asthma may cause an interaction between the two conditions. Materials and Methods: We studied the epidemiologic characteristics of all recentl...
متن کاملComment on “Computed Tomography Imaging Findings in Chemical Warfare Victims with Pulmonary Complications”
Dr.Mirsadraei and colleagues performed an interesting study about the lung HRCT findings in chemical warfare patients who suffering from long-term pulmonary complications. They found that air trapping and mosaic attenuation were the most common lung HRCT findings. Also they divided patients in different clinical entities according to the lung HRCT findings (Bronchiolitis Oblitrans, pulmonary fi...
